      Maryam Bagzada Back in her home country of Afghanistan, Maryam stood out in her community as a representative for women’s rights – particularly for education. She was able to secure a scholarship to UBC where she is in her final year of a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science with a minor in commerce. When the Taliban took over Afghanistan, her family (particularly her mother) were targeted and they endured much physical and psychological trauma. With the help of her UBC professor, she lobbied for and was successful in achieving refugee status – and they came to Canada with nothing but their passports. Our LYD winner spent her early years of childhood with her indigenous (Kookum) grandmother however was later placed in the child welfare system spent most of her childhood as a youth in care. She has survived the child welfare system however it left her without family or supports until she aged out of the system.     Noor KesbehLive Your Dream Award (2021) 2nd Place Recipient Noor fled her home country which was over taken and invaded by another country in warfare, forcing her and her parents to find a new home. Despite losing her ties with her culture and her country, Noor is very grateful to be living in Canada and pursuing her dream of helping others like herself. She started as a live in caregiver and suffered exploitation and abuse in the workplace, but she persevered in order to obtain her Canadian permanent resident status.     Soroptimist will be launching a New Program for Girls in July 2014

    In July 2014, Soroptimist International of the Americas will launch a new global program to help girls take control of their lives and live their dreams. As the Women’s opportunity Awards is SIA’s cornerstone program for assisting women, this new girl program will be the primary way SIA will assist girls. Concepts and research was approved by the board of directors in June 2013. The draft goal of the program is “girls will have the resources they need to pursue their career goals.” This will include providing girls with information on available careers, goal setting, pursuing goals and overcoming setbacks.
