    Soroptimist International of Vancouver Joins Xpey Pipe Ceremony, Spreading Joy with Christmas Gifts and Handmade Cookies

    December 20, 2023 (Soroptimist International of Vancouver) Soroptimist honoured to attend Pipe Ceremony with parents, teacher and students at Xpey. The elder shared his wisdom and often spoke to the assembled students about courage and kindness, and reminded them to remember their first pipe ceremony. Two soroptimist members, Donna Webb and Jane Rae, welcomed in to experience the blessing. The concert followed with Bannock and Santa Claus and everyone feasted on the two celebratory offerings. The concert contained: indigenous singing and drumming, an honoring with candles lit to remember the residential school, the young ones bounced with glee with smiles as wide as the world., dressed in their finery.     Media and the Mind Conference on May 14th

    Soroptimist International of Vancouver and UBC HOPE are proud to present our Media and the Mind Conference on May 14th from 9:30am – 4pm at the UBC Vancouver campus. This year’s conference is focused on bringing together members of the community to create an open dialogue regarding mental health as well as how we perceive and use social media.     2015-2016 SI of Vancouver’s New Girls Program

    UBC HOPE and SI of Vancouver’s Women’s Career Conference on May 9th from 10am – 3pm on the UBC campus brought together women from different walks of life in efforts to empower, educate and equip women of this generation with the tools and skills needed to turn their dreams into reality. Girls from local Vancouver high schools and colleges were invited to this free conference where there was a morning of inspiring keynote speakers, a catered lunch, and an afternoon of workshops where they learned important life skills such as university transition and how to network with professionals in the field they hope to go into.     The Power of Choice – Campus Safety Workshop Stage I

    The first stage of the workshops is focusing on male-identified audience and elaborating the concept of the Power of Choice. A powerful heart-and-eye-opening large group presentation to an all male identified audience on masculinity conditioning and gender stereotypes and how they impact the choices young men make regarding their behaviours and attitudes toward each other and in particular, toward girls and women.     President’s Report for Year 2013 – 2014

    Last year, the keywords for our club were “Continuation” and “Encouragement.” We positioned ourselves as continuation from the past – not just the tangible resources, but also the talents, wisdom and community connections that our members have conducted for the club over the past years. We encouraged our own members to participate in events, meetings and conference. We encouraged as many people as possible from the public to be judges of our awards, to perform in our events, and also to volunteer and contribute to our events.     March Guest Speaker: Anita Roberts, SafeTeen – Powerful Alternatives to Violence

    Soroptimist International of Vancouver (“SI Vancouver”) was very happy and honoured to invite Ms. Anita Roberts, the founder of SafeTeen as Guest Speaker at our March 11th Meeting. Many members in SI Vancouver have known Anita as Soroptimist 2011 Ruby Award recipient. Soroptimist Ruby Award is the award that honours the woman who, through her profession, has worked to improve the lives of women and girls, has had a significant impact on the lives of women and girls, and would inspire and encourage other women.     One of the projects that Soroptimist Vancouver has done for years is to sponsor the ASK Friendship Centre in our local community. What is ASK & What do they do? A. S. K. = The Arbutus, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale Friendship Society ASK Friendship Centre is an Adult Day Centre focusing on the well being of seniors and their caregivers. Their program is designed for seniors who have chronic health challenges or who have difficulty meeting their own social needs. There are opportunities to make new friends and have fun doing therapeutic activities with the support of a caring team of trained staff members. 60% of their clients are dementia patients. They…
