Courage, Education, and the Power of Women
Khatira Daryabi’s story is one of courage, determination, and a strong belief in the power of education.
As a young girl growing up in Afghanistan, Khatira questioned early in life why the rules imposed on women and girls differed from men and boys. She challenged the expectations around gender, freedom, and who was allowed to speak. Even learning to ride a bicycle became an act of resistance.
Years later, while studying in the United States, Khatira learned that it was no longer safe for her to return home. At only 14, she crossed the border into Canada, claimed refugee status, entered foster care, learned English, worked part-time, and continued her education. A journey that we can only imagine.
She is now completing degrees in political science and philosophy, along with a master’s degree in business management. Her education has given her more than academic credentials. It has given her language for what she experienced, confidence in her own voice, and the tools to advocate for others.
Khatira has also brought her family to Canada and now carries significant responsibility for supporting her parents, her sister, who lives with a disability, and her younger brother, while continuing her studies.
What stands out most is that Khatira does not speak only about what she has endured. She speaks about what she is building. She has completed a memoir, she is considering what her post-secondary path will be (perhaps law?), and is determined to dedicate her life to public service, particularly in support of women and children.
For Khatira, education has been a way of reclaiming her identity and choosing the direction of her own life.
Soroptimist International of Vancouver is deeply honoured to recognize Khatira as our 2026 Live Your Dream Award recipient and to support her as she continues to use her education, courage, and voice to help create change.
We are also proud to share that The Soroptimist International Western Canada Region also recognized Khatira’s determination and awarded her the 2nd place Live Your Dream award for our region.
