As each recipient spoke, we were given a glimpse into the true impact of these awards. They shared not only what the recognition meant to them, but also what they are building in their lives. Some spoke about continuing their education, while others shared about motherhood, leadership, and creating a better future for themselves and their families. Several stories were marked by profound resilience, including experiences of immigration, foster care, physical violence, misogyny, and other hardships they have moved through.

What stood out most was not only what they had survived, but what they are choosing to create now.

There was so much strength in the room through their honest stories. And there was hope. One guest shared with me, after hearing the women speak, “At first I was afraid of where this world was going. After hearing them speak, now I think we’re going to be ok.”

Again and again, we were reminded that when women are supported, resourced, and given space to be authentic, they do extraordinary things. These recipients are not only moving forward in their own lives, they are also shaping stronger communities and helping create a world where women and girls can thrive.

We were especially pleased to have the event emceed by Shelly M., a previous Live Your Dream Award recipient (2012) who completed her post-secondary degree at UBC in 2014 with a Bachelor in Psychology. Shelly is now a current member of Soroptimist International of Vancouver, and her presence on stage carried a special kind of meaning. She represents the lasting ripple effect of what it means for SIV to offer these awards to women. To see a former award recipient return to leadership and help honour the next group of women and girls was both moving and inspiring.

That kind of full-circle moment reflects what Soroptimist has always believed: that investing in women’s education, confidence, and well-being changes lives across generations.

As we listened to the recipients speak, it was impossible not to feel the grassroots heart of this work. Soroptimist International of Vancouver has always been rooted in community. We are women supporting women. We are local. We are hands-on. We believe in the practical, life-changing power of education, mentorship, and encouragement. Awards like these are not just about financial support. They are also a message that says: we see you, we believe in you, and your life matters.

This year’s event also felt especially meaningful as Soroptimist International of Vancouver approaches its 100th anniversary in April. For a century, our club has been committed to supporting and empowering women and girls through education, opportunity, advocacy, and care. While times change, the heart of that mission remains the same. Acknowledging recipients at events like this one remind us that the work is still needed, and still deeply alive.

The stories shared on Saturday were not abstract. They are real, personal, and undeniably courageous. They reminded us that behind every award application is a woman making difficult choices, holding responsibilities, carrying dreams, and finding a way forward. We were reminded that our continued support, at the right moment, can make a lasting difference to many lives.

We left the afternoon feeling moved, proud, and deeply grateful. Grateful for the recipients who trusted us with their stories. Grateful for the members and volunteers who help make these awards possible. Grateful for the chance to keep showing up for women and girls in our community in meaningful ways.
