Violet Richardson Award 2013 Recipient – Carole Lee
Congratulations! Soroptimist International of Vancouver recognized Carole’s efforts to make our community a better place.
Recipient: Carole Lee ($250.00 Award)
Charity: Queen Alexander Club at Magee Secondary School ($250.00 Award)

A Grade 11 student at Magee Secondary School, she is currently the co-chair of the Queen Alexander Club for the Queen Alexandra Elementary School. She started her involvement with Queen Alexander Secondary School since she was in Grade 8. Queen Alexander School is an inner city school where many students come from single parent homes. 38% are receiving support for English as a Second Language and many families earn less than $30,000 per year. In October 2010, QAES was placed on the list of schools that the Vancouver School Board would consider closing due to budget shortfall. On November 9, 2010, as a council intern, she joined several other QAC members at a public meeting sponsored by the VSB. At this meeting, she was one of those who expressed the importance of QAES and presented a petition signed by over 900 Magee students, encouraging the VSB to keep the school open. The VSB decided to keep QAES open and establish a Fine Arts Multicultural Integrated Learning For youth program. This was one of the most eye opening experiences for her ; seeing how the club efforts could form an unbreakable bond between both schools and truly make a huge impact on the lives of the students at QAES.
