    Soroptimist International of Vancouver was very happy to invite Ms. Barbara Hall, the President of Provincial Council of Women and Vice President of Vancouver Council of Women as our Guest Speaker for our February Club Meeting. The roles and responsibilities of the Vancouver Council of Women is to lobby both provincial and federal governments through the submission of resolutions that advocate for improving the lives of women and children. Federates include Soroptomist International of Vancouver, the Developmental Disabilities Association, the YWCA Metro Vancouver organization, the University Women’s Club of Vancouver and the West Coast LEAF organization to name a few.     Soroptimist International will be attending the 65th Annual UN Conference for Non-Governmental Organizations next week for the needs of women and girls

    A Soroptimist International delegation will be speaking up for women and girls at the UN DPI/NGO Conference next week. The theme of the 63rd UN DPI/NGO Conference is Advance Global Health, Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The conference is an annual event, run in partnership between the United Nations Department of Public Information, the Australian Government and the worldwide NGO community. The dates of the conference are the 30th of August to the 1st of September.     Birthing in Pacific – reducing maternal mortality and morbidity

    Everyday in Papua New Guinea 3 women die due to complications of pregnancy/childbirth. For every woman who dies, about 30 sustain significant disability. 45 out of every 1000 babies born will not live to see their first birthday. Birthing in the Pacific is a Soroptimist International project to save mother’s lives in Papua New Guinea, reducing maternal mortality and morbidity by training and equipping birth attendants, educating communities and improving facilities. The project was set up by SI South West Pacific, involves Soroptimist clubs in Papua New Guinea and is supported by Soroptimists worldwide as part of the 2011-13 Soroptimist International President Alice Wells’ December 10 Appeal.     Soroptimist International launched its Global Impact Report 2012-13, demonstrating the collective impact of SI’s work around the world, educating, empowering and enabling opportunities for women and girls. Educate, Empower, Enable In 2012, Soroptimists reported on 3,727 projects to promote women and girls’ participation in education and leadership. Nearly 110,000 women and girls were educated, empowered and enabled. SI evidence shows that small scale projects, together, can have huge scale impact improving the lives of women and girls.
