Last year, the keywords for our club were “Continuation” and “Encouragement.” We positioned ourselves as continuation from the past – not just the tangible resources, but also the talents, wisdom and community connections that our members have conducted for the club over the past years. We encouraged our own members to participate in events, meetings and conference. A Soroptimist International delegation will be speaking up for women and girls at the UN DPI/NGO Conference next week. The theme of the 63rd UN DPI/NGO Conference is Advance Global Health, Achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The conference is an annual event, run in partnership between the United Nations Department of Public Information, the Australian Government and the worldwide NGO community. The dates of the conference are the 30th of August to the 1st of September. ASK Friendship Society is one of the organizations that Soroptimist International of Vancouver has sponsored for many years. A. S. K. = The Arbutus, Shaughnessy, Kerrisdale Friendship Society ASK held its small fundraising event on Thursday, August 14, 2014. Five of the members from Soroptimist International of Vancouver had supported the event and enjoy the great time there. The purpose of this Fundraiser was to raise funds for gasoline and other necessary maintenance expenditures for its transportation – an 18 passenger wheelchair accessible vehicle. A Local Project – Supporting Queen Alexandra School
For years, Soroptimist International of Vancouver has committed to provide the funding to Queen Alexandra School on East Broadway for its “healthy recess snack program” for the children in Kindergarten to Grade 7. It is one of the greatest projects we have. To support Literacy, every Christmas the club provides Book Bags that handmade by Soroptimist members to Grade 1 and Grade 2 children at Queen Alexandra. Each Book Bag contains a book and a snuggly reading buddy. The children have been thrilled to receive a book they can keep for their very own. Soroptimist will be launching a New Program for Girls in July 2014
In July 2014, Soroptimist International of the Americas will launch a new global program to help girls take control of their lives and live their dreams. As the Women’s opportunity Awards is SIA’s cornerstone program for assisting women, this new girl program will be the primary way SIA will assist girls. Concepts and research was approved by the board of directors in June 2013. The draft goal of the program is “girls will have the resources they need to pursue their career goals.” This will include providing girls with information on available careers, goal setting, pursuing goals and overcoming setbacks.
